Environmental education and community awareness
Building environmental clubs in schools and running awareness campaigns with chiefs, youth and residents.
The case
Environmental protection that holds depends on people understanding what is at stake where they live. This is the strand the rest of the work is built on.
ACEPS works through the institutions communities already have, rather than around them: schools, traditional authorities, youth and women’s groups. Pupils trained as environmental ambassadors carry the work back into their own households, and campaigns run with chiefs and opinion leaders reach the people who make decisions about land.
What this involves
- Establishing and strengthening environmental clubs in basic and senior high schools
- Community awareness campaigns and dialogue sessions with chiefs, opinion leaders, youth and residents
- Training students as environmental ambassadors
- Developing educational materials on land reclamation, climate change, pollution, biodiversity and waste
- Environmental celebration events: World Environment Day, tree planting and clean-up exercises
